Good Idea.

Hello everyone,

You won't have seen me on here for a while as I haven't been doing any walking this year, I'm having a gap year LOL! I know, I'm supposed to have had it when I was younger but I didn't so I'm haivng it now - okay?

Actually I'm only writing this because Vicki came up with a good idea, she suggested the other night that I walk across England. Well that sounds great thought I, but then it always does while you're sitting on the couch, even the planning is fun but the night before you're due to embark on your carefully planned adventure you suddenly realise you forgot something, its not easy walking non stop for two whole weeks carrying your home on your back. Its no surprise why snails move so slow, its cos they're knackered.

Anyway I will keep you posted on what happens next - if anything.

I first read of the Coast-to-Coast path many years ago, when I was still in high school. I was at the dentist's office killing time with a magazine that had a travel feature on walking in Britain. I could not believe that it was possible to walk across England (where I had never been), given that I'm from a country where it just isn't possible to walk on privately owned land. It sounded like a dream holiday for me, walking all day, not having to carry a tonne of gear if you didn't want to, being able to sleep in a real bed at night if you chose . So different from an arduous long distance hiking trip in Canada, where you are completely on your own, you have to carry EVERYTHING on your back, and every trip becomes an exercise in endurance and survival. When, years later, I found myself living in England, I was in walking heaven. My weekends revolved around walking and exploring the countryside on foot. I haven't done the coast-to-coast path yet, but have walked the Cumbria Way, the West Highland Way, and some of the Southwest Coast path; all fantastic experiences. I'm hoping to do a section of Offa's Dyke path in 2010. I certainly look forward to hearing more, should you take up your wife's suggestion to walk across the country.

My girlfriend and I gave it a go a couple of years ago. Our efforts to do it in 11 days were thwarted by 5 days of torrential rain. We gave up after 7, my gf didn't had more blister than skin on her feet. Surprisingly she can't wait to do it again, and neither can I! Enjoy yourself.. and take the 14 days or more if you can.
